Ministerio de Salud de Panamá (Minsa) — Panama's Ministry of Health is piloting VANESSA, an AI dengue surveillance platform, for six months in San Miguelito. Phase one is a WhatsApp bot where residents report suspected dengue cases and mosquito breeding sites with location, photos and text, backed by regional health-promotion, epidemiology, environmental-sanitation and vector-control teams.

AI mammography detects 29% more cancers in a 105,934-woman trial
In the MASAI randomised controlled trial of 105,934 Swedish women using the Transpara reading-support tool, AI mammography found 29% more cancers than standard double reading, cut radiologists' reading workload by ~44% and did not increase false positives (interim, Lancet Oncology 2023). Final results (The Lancet, 29 January 2026) add safety endpoints: ~12% fewer interval cancers (1.55 vs 1.76 per 1,000), 27% fewer aggressive (non-luminal-A) cancers and screen-detection sensitivity of 81% vs 74%.

LLM copilot improved clinician work but not outcomes in Kenya trial
In a cluster-randomised trial in Nature Medicine (2026), 'AI Consult', an LLM clinical decision-support tool in 16 Kenyan primary-care clinics (>9,600 patients), markedly improved documentation and treatment planning and cut antibiotic-related costs, but did not significantly change patient outcomes: 14-day treatment failure was 2.2% vs 2.0%, with no difference in hospitalisation, death or satisfaction. It is RCT-grade evidence of an LLM copilot improving clinician process without (yet) shifting hard outcomes.

Endoscopists' detection rate fell from 28% to 22% after AI use
A four-centre observational study in Poland (ACCEPT/OperA project), published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology in August 2025, gave the first real-world evidence of AI deskilling among clinicians: endoscopists' adenoma detection rate on standard, non-AI colonoscopies fell from 28% before routine AI exposure to 22% after. The design was not randomised, and the authors note its population differs from the main ACCEPT trial target, so generalisability is unconfirmed. It is a rare documented downside of clinical AI.
Brainomix stroke AI tripled patients' functional independence in NHS study
Brainomix 360 e-Stroke, CT-analysis AI from an Oxford University spinout, guides treatment and transfer decisions across NHS stroke networks in England. A Royal Berkshire Hospital study in Frontiers in Neurology linked it to a tripling in patients reaching functional independence, 16% to 48%, and a real-world evaluation found mechanical thrombectomy up over 50%. The study was pre/post observational, not randomised, and the vendor-reported scale of about 60,000 patients at every English stroke centre is unverified.
Insilico's Rentosertib becomes first fully AI-designed drug in Phase III
Insilico Medicine's Rentosertib, the first AI-designed drug (target and molecule from generative AI) to report a Phase 2a trial, in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (Nature Medicine, June 2025), entered Phase III in July 2026. The randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled pivotal trial enrols 320 patients over 52 weeks (NCT07687459), a registrational first for a fully AI-originated drug.

OpenAI's Whisper hallucinated in medical transcription, AP investigation finds
An October 2024 Associated Press investigation, with research by Allison Koenecke (Cornell) and Mona Sloane (University of Virginia), found OpenAI's Whisper routinely hallucinated, inventing text no one spoke. Whisper underlies a Nabla ambient-documentation tool that 30,000-plus clinicians in 40 health systems used for some 7 million visits. The researchers judged nearly 40% of hallucinations harmful or concerning, among them a fabricated medication and invented commentary.
