Austria will build AI into the federal administration's electronic files
Austrian Federal Chancellery (Bundeskanzleramt) — Austria's Federal Chancellery will embed AI for civil servants inside ELAK, the Bund's digital case-file system. Phased rollout of KI im ELAK begins within weeks and ends by late 2026, letting officials query records, condense paperwork and get answers without switching tools. Sovereign LLM-as-a-Service capacity at the Federal Computing Centre (BRZ) hosts this public-sector AI, and GovGPT already reaches around 20,000 federal employees.

Austria starts rolling out GovGPT to federal civil servants
Austrian Federal Chancellery — Austria's Federal Chancellery has begun rolling out GovGPT, a sovereign AI assistant for civil servants, starting in the Chancellery and moving department by department. Staff draft texts, condense long documents and build searchable knowledge libraries, with queries and uploads processed on Federal Computing Centre infrastructure instead of a public chatbot. The Ministry of Finance followed from 21 July and the consumer protection, care, health, social affairs and labour ministry on 28 July, targeting 180,000-plus federal employees.

Austria to add AI summaries to federal electronic files
Austrian federal government (State Secretary for Digitalisation) — Austria's State Secretary for Digitalisation, Alexander Pröll, says the federal electronic file system (ELAK) will add AI in the second half of 2026, letting 13,000 staff query whole file collections and get structured AI document summaries instantly. It is among five Public AI initiative applications, alongside KI-SUN, a knowledge assistant already covering 6,000-plus pages of federal training material.

Austrian court rules employment service AI algorithm complies with GDPR
Austrian Federal Administrative Court (BVwG) — AMS has won a GDPR fight over AI in employment services: Austria's Federal Administrative Court ruled AMAS doesn't breach Article 22's automation ban, since staff kept genuine power to overrule its verdicts. A 2020 Data Protection Authority ban on the automated decision-making system in public employment, in force since January 2021, is now void.

Austrian government launches AI Act chatbot for citizens
RTR GmbH / Austrian Federal Government — RTR's KI-Servicestelle built an AI Act chatbot answering public queries on the EU AI Act in German, giving Austria a public AI regulation assistant. It uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to draw answers only from verified sources, including the Act's text. The goal: making the compliance framework understandable for citizens, organisations and companies.

Practical manual for digital administration and AI ethics
Federal Chancellery (Bundeskanzleramt) — Version 2.0 of the Praxisleitfaden Digitale Verwaltung: KI, Ethik und Recht gives Austria's Federal Chancellery a working reference for AI ethics in public administration, covering how officials should plan, design, procure and deploy AI systems lawfully. New material folds in generative AI, quantum AI and EU AI Act duties, paired with a Checkliste für ethische KI in der Verwaltung 2.0 for practical use. A first edition preceded it in November 2023, before this update to AI in government administration tools.

KI implementation plan 2024 supplementing AIM AT 2030
Austrian Federal Government (Federal Chancellery and Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure) — The Federal Government's KI-Umsetzungsplan 2024 sets out 47 Austrian AI policy measures across all twelve federal ministries, extending AIM AT 2030 as an interim report. Eight priority areas include trustworthy AI, resilience and security, climate neutrality, AI literacy, digital administration and governance, favouring short- to medium-term action. This national AI strategy ties each measure to European values and the EU AI Act.

DSB publishes first FAQ on AI and data protection
Austrian Data Protection Authority (Datenschutzbehörde, DSB) — Austria's Datenschutzbehörde (DSB) claimed oversight of high-risk AI deployed in policing, courts and electoral processes, marking its debut FAQ on AI data protection compliance. Firms deploying such systems must meet GDPR's lawfulness, transparency, minimisation and accuracy tests, cross-referenced against the EU AI Act. Handling personal data through automated systems now falls under both frameworks simultaneously.

AI Advisory Board constituted to advise federal government

Austrian Parliament (Nationalrat) — Austria's Parliament passed a law reshaping AI regulation Austria-wide, amending the KommAustria-Gesetz and Telekommunikationsgesetz 2021. Austrian firms' AI maturity rises from 30 to 36 points, McKinsey finds
McKinsey & Company with the Industriellenvereinigung (IV) Task Force KI — McKinsey's State of AI in Austria update with the Federation of Austrian Industries' AI task force scores average corporate AI maturity at 36 on a 0-100 scale, against 30 a year before. Answers came from 135 tech and digital chiefs at 54 firms. Seven in ten lack hard metrics showing whether that AI readiness pays off.
