Lithuania's Seimas advances a ban on deceptive AI-made content

Seimas of Lithuania — The Seimas backed Social Democrat MP Birutė Vėsaitė's amendments to the Law on Public Information 51–5, with 11 abstaining, advancing Lithuania AI regulation. Sharing material made or reworked with AI tools that misrepresents real people's identity, words or deeds would be banned. These AI content rules go to the Culture Committee, then plenary on 10 December.

Lithuania tenders a €5 million AI airspace surveillance system

Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania — Lithuania's Ministry of National Defence issued a roughly €5 million procurement for AI airspace surveillance, merging military sensors, radars and other agencies' feeds live. Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas expects stronger air-threat warning and response by state institutions from this AI drone detection network. Piloting begins early 2027, full sensor coverage follows within 2027, and NATO allies' platforms connect by 2028.

Lithuania to open AI regulatory sandbox with €3m EU funding

Ministry of the Economy and Innovation (EIMIN) — €3 million in EU funding will back Lithuania's new AI regulatory sandbox, making it one of Europe's earliest adopters of such a scheme, per the Ministry of the Economy and Innovation. Small and medium enterprises gain a supervised space to build and refine AI tools before commercial launch, with the Innovation Agency and Communications Regulatory Authority (RRT) as watchdogs. The initiative reflects a wider Lithuanian AI policy push toward safe AI system development ahead of market entry.

Amendments to the Law on Technology and Innovation implementing the EU AI Act

Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania — Lithuania AI regulation gained a legal footing when the Seimas passed Act XV-105, aligning the Law on Technology and Innovation with Regulation (EU) 2024/1689. The Innovation Agency now serves as notifying authority for AI conformity assessment, a statutory sandbox for testing AI systems was established, and start-up classification thresholds were narrowed. Most articles applied from 1 April 2025.

IKI rolls out AI promotion planning across 250 stores

IKI — IKI is extending AI promotion planning to 250 supermarkets in Lithuania with SymphonyAI's Promotional Evaluation and Promotional Planning products. Category trials lifted promotional forecast accuracy by more than 10 percentage points and cut empty shelves, vendor-reported figures. Category management head Klavs Berzins says buyers now foresee demand, the point of retail demand forecasting.

IKI trials AI facial age estimation at self-checkouts

IKI Lithuania — AI facial age estimation now guards a self-checkout lane at IKI's Vilnius store on Pilaitės pr. 42, confirming shoppers buying age-restricted goods are over 25. StrongPoint built the on-device system for the Lithuania grocery chain, part of Rewe Group, shrinking a 30-second manual check to under 10 seconds and aiming to automate 60% of such checks. IKI says the automatic age recognition analysis stays on the device, sending nothing offsite and storing no images.

Lithuania ranks first in the EU for agentic AI use, ministry says

Ministry of the Economy and Innovation of Lithuania — Organisations in Lithuania lead the European Union on agentic AI adoption, the Economy and Innovation Ministry reported from new OpenAI research. AI agents produce 85% of activity on OpenAI's enterprise tools among local users. Ministry economist Titas Budreika said the share of firms using AI tools grew 2.5 times in a year.

Lithuania's State Pathology Centre adopts AI to score breast-cancer HER2

Valstybinis patologijos centras (Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos) — Lithuania's State Pathology Centre, part of Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos, has adopted Ibex Breast HER2, AI digital pathology that helps pathologists score the HER2 biomarker in breast cancer. Santaros Klinikos calls it the first CE-IVDR certified algorithm of its kind in the Baltic states.

Vilniaus viešasis transportas — Vilniaus viešasis transportas, public transport operator for Lithuania's capital, now uses AI customer service for its 50 to 100 daily passenger enquiries.
