Swiss Federal Council sets guidelines for AI in federal administration
Swiss Federal Council — Switzerland's Federal Council adopted the report 'Increasing the Efficiency of Administrative Processes through Process Automation and Artificial Intelligence', answering Postulate 24.3582 Silberschmidt and setting rules for AI in public administration. Priority goes to translation support, case and application checks, data handling, business management workflows and back-office finance and procurement. Federal Administration units must keep the tools human-centred, trustworthy and sustainable, and a sharper inventory of algorithmic systems should speed up scaling.

Swiss Federal Chancellery sets two-year AI roadmap for the administration
Swiss Federal Chancellery — Switzerland AI policy for federal offices follows a new Federal Chancellery two-year roadmap keeping six of eight planned measures after funding shrank to 2 million francs. Work centres on mapping process gains, an in-house generative AI system and legal groundwork for administrative use. Swiss parliament gives members an in-house AI assistant
Swiss Parliamentary Services — Swiss federal parliamentarians are getting PIA, an in-house AI assistant, for the autumn session. Users include council members and their personal staff, Parliamentary Services employees and parliamentary group staff; for now it works best on committee documents rather than internet research. Zurich canton to roll out AI transcription and plain-language tools
Regierungsrat, Canton of Zurich — The Canton of Zurich's government says it will make two piloted tools permanent across its administration: TranscriboZH, for AI transcription of audio and video, and KlartextZH, a plain-language text simplifier. Decided on 9 July 2026 (Regierungsratsbeschluss Nr. 749/2026), the step belongs to SynerKI, a cross-departmental project that will also build a central AI service platform for handling protected data. The Regierungsrat approved 2.76 million francs one-off and 3.87 million francs a year in running costs.

Basel judges say AI-written lay filings are swelling their workload
Zivilgericht and Appellationsgericht Basel-Stadt — AI-drafted court filings from people without lawyers are inflating dossiers at Basel's civil court, where Patrick Müller says single scrappy pages have given way to polished multi-page claims. Stephan Wullschleger of the Basel appeal court notes that such submissions read well yet often press irrelevant grievances, including futile delay objections the software recommends. Nobody can measure the burden, and losing litigants still pay.

Swiss Federal Audit Office (SFAO/EFK) — audit of the Federal Supreme Court — No efficiency gains from court AI can yet be shown at the Federal Supreme Court, the Swiss Federal Audit Office concludes after reviewing its anonymisation checks, running since 2021, and ChatTF, an in-house chatbot launched in 2025. The SFAO credits the court with early attention to trustworthy use and issues four recommendations, among them case-by-case appraisal and ongoing measurement of results.

Swiss data protection regulator confirms FADP applies directly to AI
Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) — Existing law already covers AI in Switzerland, the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) has ruled: the Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) applies directly to AI-supported data processing, no new statute required. Under this Swiss AI regulation, anyone building, offering or deploying an AI system must explain what it does, why, and where its data comes from, and people keep the right to know they're talking to a machine, not a person. High-risk processing can be justified with adequate safeguards, but the same data protection AI compliance regime rules out real-time facial recognition and social scoring outright. FADP has been in force since September 2023.

UBS makes AI skills a hiring bar for junior bankers
UBS — Starting in 2027, UBS will reject graduate and intern applicants who cannot demonstrate AI skills in investment banking. Swisscom — Swisscom is piloting an AI system named KIRA that analyses customer conversations in three Swiss retail branches, located in Bern, Aarau and Lausanne, as part of a broader push toward AI in retail customer service. Motion sensors monitor shopper movement while microphones capture sales discussions with customer consent, and anonymised transcripts are then reviewed through AI-driven retail analytics to surface what shoppers are actually seeking. The trial is scheduled to last two to three months, and if it proves effective, Swisscom intends to roll KIRA out to 10 to 15 branches by the end of the year.

Canton of Ticino — Canton Ticino will phase AI in schools from 2027, formally from January once the text is finalised in late November. Primary pupils will not use these tools; lower-secondary use stays under teacher supervision, with short modules inside existing lessons and a privacy-minded teacher platform on Apertus, the first Swiss large language model.
