Pope Leo XIV creates a Vatican commission on artificial intelligence

Holy SeePope Leo XIV has instituted an Interdicasterial Commission on Artificial Intelligence, the forum for Holy See AI policy. Cardinal Michael Czerny, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, signed the rescript, released by the Holy See Press Office; papal assent came at a 3 May 2026 audience. Seven bodies take part: that one, those for the Doctrine of the Faith, Culture and Education and Communication, and the Pontifical Academy for Life, of Sciences and of Social Sciences. Whichever body coordinates — a renewable yearly turn, Czerny's first — must ease cooperation and exchange on artificial-intelligence work, Vatican AI governance rules for use inside the Holy See included.

St Peter's Basilica follows Mass in 60 languages with AI

Fabric of St PeterThe Fabric of St Peter brings AI simultaneous translation to St Peter's Basilica, carrying liturgies live in up to 60 languages, partnered by the Dicastery for Communication and the technology company Translated. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, archpriest of the basilica, unveiled the scheme four centuries after the 1626 consecration. A QR code inside the church opens a browser page relaying readings, prayers and chants as sound and text in each pilgrim's tongue, nothing to download. Antonio Autorino, communications head there, dates full running of the machine interpreting to spring 2026, trials among chosen worshippers having already begun.

Every entry on this page is a named organisation putting AI to work in a real job, taken from the State of Applied AI record. Each one is traced to the report it came from and dated, and where a figure is the organisation’s own the entry says so rather than presenting it as an independent result. Readiness, ecosystem and policy figures, where shown, are attributed on the card to the body that published them.

The record is maintained continuously by the Industrial Research Unit of the Straits Institute for Applied AI: entries are added as they are found and verified, not on a schedule, and nothing is published without an open source behind it. It currently holds 2985 entries across 249 countries.
