Hungary moves AI market surveillance to its science and technology minister
Government of Hungary — Hungary AI regulation now falls under the Minister of Science and Technology rather than the Minister of Economy and Energy, after a new government decree strips market surveillance duties from the latter and hands them to the former. Government Decree No. 139/2026 (VIII.31.) makes the switch official, amending the earlier Gov. Decree 90/2026 (V.13.) through a freshly inserted Section 168/A. The reassignment had effectively already happened before this paperwork caught up, since the supervisory body's own website was already presenting itself as answering to the Ministry of Science and Technology. The decree simply confirms, on paper, which ministry now carries responsibility for policing artificial intelligence products in the market.

Nagyoroszi council opens an AI customer service for residents
Nagyoroszi Council — Nagyoroszi's council in Hungary has opened a freely reachable AI customer service, supplied by Munipolis, still learning and fed solely by the village's own web pages. Preset bubbles cover the commonest queries, typed messages work too, and adjacent topics appear unprompted. The municipal chatbot copes with several languages, spots the edge of what it knows and hands anything past that to whichever council officer owns the case; officials report lighter paperwork already.

Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal (NAV) — Hungary's Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal now grounds its 2026 audit programme in AI tax audit selection. Hungarian police facial recognition wrongly names three suspects
Hungarian Police — Misidentifications since January have dented Hungarian police facial recognition, used even for petty offences. A Nyíregyháza secondary school pupil was pursued as a fraud suspect while sitting in class 200 kilometres away; a Szeged woman stood accused of lifting a plush bear in Budapest; a 19-year-old was pinned to a shampoo theft. All three had alibis. Who supplied the kit is unpublished; Remport Ádám suspects the biometric identification cameras are Chinese-made.

Hungarian AI Council established as permanent body under Act LXXV of 2025

Hungary passes Act LXXV implementing the EU AI Act
Government of Hungary — A fresh institutional structure for enforcing the European Union's AI Act now exists in Hungary, thanks to Act LXXV of 2025 — a landmark piece of Hungarian AI regulation. Oversight duties split between two bodies: the National Accreditation Authority handles notification tasks, while a designated ministry office leads on market surveillance. Backing them is a newly formed advisory group, the Hungarian Artificial Intelligence Council, and violators risk penalties climbing to EUR 35 million or 7% of worldwide annual turnover. This EU AI Act implementation brought most requirements into force.

Hungary makes AI training compulsory for civil servants and state staff

Hungary orders AI officers in every ministry by March 2026
Government of Hungary — Hungary now requires an AI officer in every ministry under its AI governance in government ministries resolution, adopted 4 November 2025. Counties must name an AI-responsible official by 31 March 2026, and universities must assign AI specialists too, extending AI officer appointments in the public sector beyond central government. Civil servants and state-company staff face mandatory AI training, and by December 2026 ministers must fold AI teaching into education curricula.

Act LXXV of 2025 implementing the EU Artificial Intelligence Regulation in Hungary
Hungarian Parliament — Hungary now has Act LXXV of 2025, the national law implementing the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Regulation. This Hungarian AI regulation names the National Accreditation Authority as notifying body, hands market surveillance to the Minister for Enterprise Development, and sets up a Hungarian AI Council plus sector watchdogs, with the central bank covering financial AI systems. An AI regulatory sandbox and compliance procedures complete the EU AI Act implementation Hungary framework, mostly active from 1 December 2025.

Magyar Nemzeti Bank — Over 170 AI banking use cases now sit in Hungary's banking sector: operations, customer relationships, sales. Izer Norbert, who runs financial markets and digitalisation at the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, told the AI Summit 90 percent of domestic lenders use artificial intelligence already or mean to within twelve months. Eight big lenders each carry five or more active AI projects.
Uniqa Hungary settles glass and burst-pipe claims with NiQA
Uniqa Biztosító Zrt. — Uniqa Biztosító Zrt. has widened NiQA, its AI claims handling platform, from burst pipes to glass damage, and artificial intelligence now touches one household claim in three in Hungary. Thorniest category first, with every notification the eventual ambition. Automated claims assessment has paid out inside 24 hours since mid-April, and Uniqa's own forecast puts most retail claims automated by 2028.
MNB Recommendation 13/2025 on digital transformation of credit institutions including AI chapter
Magyar Nemzeti Bank (Hungarian National Bank) — Banking regulators in Hungary have made AI governance in banking mandatory: the Hungarian National Bank (MNB)'s Recommendation 13/2025 (XII.3.) on Digital Transformation of Credit Institutions supersedes the 2021 version and inserts a fresh section on responsible AI deployment. By 30 June 2026, lenders must produce an AI sub-strategy and lodge it with the MNB, meeting standards touching AI risk oversight, data handling, cybersecurity for AI tools, in-house skills and how AI is communicated to the public. AI use among mid-sized Hungarian firms reaches a record 58%
K&H Innovation Index — Corporate AI adoption in Hungary has reached a high in the K&H Innovation Index: 58 percent of firms turning over at least 300 million forints run some AI-based solution, and those building their own rose from 24 percent a half-year earlier to 36 percent. Phone interviews with 360 innovation managers ran from 14 April to 6 May. Thin skills, plus data protection and confidentiality worries, still brake adoption, cited by 66 and 52 percent of would-be AI users.
Hungary will give 500 SMEs an AI-based management system

MVM, Hungary's state-owned utility, positions the AI-powered utility billing assistant as backup for staff, not a replacement.
RTL Hungary makes a prime-time show intro with AI in half a day
RTL Hungary — RTL Hungary assembled the opening of its 'A legjobb ajánlat' second-season intro through AI video production, wrapping it inside half a day. Creative director Verebély Marcell put the choice down to a David Lynch-styled promo whose surrounding imagery resisted conventional filming; the team worked it up during April. Generative editing tools also salvaged murky, washed-out January footage.
Magyar Telekom launches Magenta AI assistant in its mobile app
Magyar Telekom — Hungary's Telekom app now offers an AI assistant telecom app feature called Magenta AI, drawing on Perplexity search technology since May 2025. Coop Szeged opens Hungary's first hybrid smart store with AI cameras
Coop Szeged — Coop Szeged's new outlet at Szent István Square runs an AI-powered smart store model: staffed by day, then unmanned overnight via app-only entry and payment. Sensors spot odd movement without facial recognition, and a separate device identifies fruit and vegetables at checkout. Covering 150 square metres, it is Hungary's first shop blending human staff with automated retail AI.
Auchan opens first cashierless AI-powered store in Budapest
Auchan Hungary — Budapest now hosts Hungary's first cashierless AI store, Auchan GO, launched by Auchan Hungary on 10 April 2025 at Bikás Park. Shoppers enter and settle bills through the OkAuchan app, while 20 overhead cameras paired with weight-sensing shelving, spread across just 18 square metres, register each item taken. Cloudpick engineered the smart store platform behind the shop, rolled out locally by partner Kende Retail Operation.
Hungarian vocational schools start a compulsory AI basics course
Energiaügyi Minisztérium — Hungarian vocational schools have opened a 10-hour course, 'A mesterséges intelligencia alapjai', midway through this academic year, and AI teaching in vocational education must reach every ninth-grader by 31 December 2026. A trial reached 1,700 learners at 63 sites, 60 home-based and three abroad, says the Energiaügyi Minisztérium; Logiscool supplies syllabus, platform and staff training. School AI lessons should leave pupils able to wield it, follow its mechanics and spot dangers.
Allee shopping centre creates AI-generated campaign character Alíz
Allee Shopping Centre (Budapest) — Budapest's Allee shopping centre fronted spring promotions with Alíz, a fully generative AI-generated marketing character shaped through human input. This virtual influencer campaign spread across the mall's screens, spotlighting goods, services and events. The rollout paired with a futurist exhibition in the atrium, spanning April to May 2025.
IKEA Soroksár uses AI and robots for world's largest fulfilment store
IKEA (Ingka Group) — Machines dominate IKEA Soroksár's floor: automated guided vehicles and robots fill most space at the world's largest AI fulfilment centre. An algorithm picks goods placement, cutting turnaround on Budapest internet orders, part of a wider AI warehouse automation push. IKEA says people still work alongside the machines.

Every entry on this page is a named organisation putting AI to work in a real job, taken from the State of Applied AI record. Each one is traced to the report it came from and dated, and where a figure is the organisation’s own the entry says so rather than presenting it as an independent result. Readiness, ecosystem and policy figures, where shown, are attributed on the card to the body that published them.
The record is maintained continuously by the Industrial Research Unit of the Straits Institute for Applied AI: entries are added as they are found and verified, not on a schedule, and nothing is published without an open source behind it. It currently holds 4731 entries across 249 countries.
