Malta designates IDPC as AI Act market surveillance authority
Government of Malta — Malta has named its Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC) the market surveillance authority for high-risk AI systems under the EU AI Act, per Legal Notice 227 of 2025. This Malta AI Act designation gives the watchdog jurisdiction over deployments in policing, frontier control, immigration, courts, elections, biometric ID and emergency response — the categories the AI Act treats as high-risk. A companion clause in the notice lays out when live facial-recognition scanning of crowds may be authorised, forming part of Malta's AI regulatory compliance regime.
