Gibraltar switches on live facial recognition at its open border

A heavy volume of stills ran through AI face matching in week one, flagging nobody on a police watchlist. Recordings are kept to prevent and detect crime and protect public safety and national security. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo rates the technology estate, facial recognition included, as holding up well.

Gibraltar Parliament opens 1969 Hansard to an AI search tool

Gibraltar Parliament — Gibraltar Parliament has opened the whole legislative archive — every Hansard volume back to 1969 — through a new AI Hansard search built for public use. Beyond debate transcripts the service reaches Speakers' Rulings and Standing Orders, turning precedent hunting that once required manual research into a single query. This AI-assisted parliamentary research assistant condenses debates neutrally, yet cannot draft communications, speeches or anything original. The interface is already running on parliament.gi.

Gibraltar's data watchdog joins 61 regulators on AI imagery

Gibraltar Regulatory Authority — The Gibraltar Regulatory Authority, acting as Information Commissioner, is among 61 signatories to a Joint Statement on AI-Generated Imagery, convened by the Global Privacy Assembly. Signing sets Gibraltar AI regulation alongside a common line on artificial intelligence that fabricates convincing photographs and video of identifiable people who never consented, children most at risk. Builders and users must install AI imagery safeguards, be candid about capability, pull harmful material on request, and shield children.

Gibraltar builds an in-house AI database for its arrears unit

HM Government of Gibraltar — Gibraltar's Central Arrears Unit now runs on a bespoke AI debt collection database, built after a hiring round for several vacancies yielded a single suitable applicant. Nigel Feetham, Minister for Justice, Trade and Industry, explained the gap; IT Development Manager Karon Cano wrote the model in-house with Steven Fernandez. Machine-assisted arrears tracking replaces hand-keyed spreadsheet extracts and saves one officer at least an hour's work. A chatbot with no outside feeds returns priority-debt listings.
