AI digital twin and WaterCopilot launched for Botswana's water managers

International Water Management Institute and Limpopo Watercourse Commission — Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe gained two fresh AI systems for overseeing the Limpopo River Basin on 15 April 2026, once the International Water Management Institute and the Limpopo Watercourse Commission switched on WaterCopilot and the Limpopo Digital Twin. Built alongside Microsoft, WaterCopilot responds to officials' everyday-language queries by drawing directly from hydrological records, serving as a conversational AI water management tool. Meanwhile its counterpart keeps continuous watch over the basin, feeding climate adaptation efforts and joint cross-border choices on shared water resource planning.

National Artificial Intelligence Policy in final drafting stage

Ministry of Communications and Innovation, Government of Botswana — The Ministry of Communications and Innovation is finalising a draft National Artificial Intelligence Policy after a UNESCO AI Readiness Assessment endorsed preparedness, Assistant Minister Mr Shawn Nthaile confirmed. Botswana AI policy will steer ethical, inclusive, secure deployment to national development goals. This AI governance text remains unenacted and unpublished.

Botswana Minerals — Botswana Minerals has outlined nine main exploration corridors across licences in the south, after an AI mineral exploration analysis merged decades of data over about 95,000 square kilometres.
