Tanzania's judiciary rolls out AI transcription for court judgments

Tanzania Judiciary — Speaking a ruling aloud now suffices: Tanzania's judiciary's AI transcription for courts converts the spoken words into finished text, rendering it between Kiswahili and English in minutes instead of weeks. Italian firm Almawave built the tool, tested since 2024 across 11 judicial zones under the Transcription and Translation Software programme, and courtrooms beyond that pilot are next. Checking documents is also getting quicker as this AI-powered court translation software links data with the Tanzania Revenue Authority and the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency.

National guideline for the responsible use of artificial intelligence

Ministry of Communication and Information Technology — Tanzania will issue a national guideline for responsible AI use, part of a wider Tanzania AI regulation push confirmed by Mohammed Khamis Abdulla. The rules are meant to shape how organisations deploy the fast-moving technology nationwide. AI eye screening doubles specialist follow-up in a 2,378-patient Tanzania trial

Kilimanjaro and Arusha diabetic clinics (Lancet Global Health trial) — AI diabetic retinopathy screening with an instant result and face-to-face counselling almost doubled specialist follow-up across 24 Tanzanian hospitals in Kilimanjaro and Arusha, The Lancet Global Health reported on 12 October 2026. Of 2,378 enrolled people with diabetes, 904 had true referable disease: 157 of 437 (35.9%) in the AI arm reached the central ophthalmology clinic within 8 weeks, versus 85 of 467 (18.2%) under standard care with deferred grading and a phone call, a 17.7-point gap and odds ratio 2.52. Charles Cleland's AI eye-screening trial ran from March 2023 to August 2024, funded by the British Council for the Prevention of Blindness, Christian Blind Mission and the Sir Halley Stewart Trust.

Zanzibar launches an AI drone pilot against mosquito breeding sites

Zanzibar Ministry of Health (ZAMEP) — Zanzibar's Ministry of Health, through the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Programme, has launched AI drone mosquito control to find and treat breeding sites, with WHO, Japan's SORA Technology and the Ifakara Health Institute, funded by the Government of Japan. Drone surveillance reaches places conventional methods miss and lets health teams treat breeding sites on detection, officials say. Malaria prevalence on the islands is 0.04 percent.
