City of Kigali — Kigali now machine-sorts rubbish: the City's pilot runs an AI waste sorting system that scans waste, flagging it hazardous, plastic, e-waste, paper, organic or otherwise. Built on the Smart Eco-Platform, it links an app to IoT smart bins and an admin portal. COPED Ltd's Buregeya tested the AI-powered waste sorting system at Kigali's 29th International Trade Fair, now expanding to top refuse sites.

Rwanda launches a national satellite-data programme with Planet Labs

National Bank of Rwanda — Rwanda AI regulation now covers all licensed banks, insurers, payment providers, pension schemes and microfinance institutions under the National Bank of Rwanda's Guidelines No. 52/2026 on Artificial Intelligence Risk Management for Financial Institutions. Firms must set up board-level governance, validate models and keep humans in the loop, with tighter rules where systems flag suspicious transactions or assess borrower risk. It draws on a ministry, Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board and partner knowledge base, handing unresolved queries to a human expert. ICT and Innovation Minister Paula Ingabire says Tunga got 60% of test-phase questions right.
