Cambodia launches a free AI Khmer-English translator for the public

Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications — A free AI translation app, TranslateKH 2.0, went live from Cambodia's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, letting anyone switch text between Khmer and English via the Play Store, the App Store or a fresh site, www.translate.kh. Powered by deep learning and a large language model, the second-generation machine translation service reads whole passages for meaning instead of parsing sentence by sentence, which the ministry credits with sharper results than its predecessor.

AI listens for gibbons across Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains

Conservation International — An AI wildlife monitoring effort from the US-headquartered nonprofit Conservation International now picks up pileated-gibbon calls through listening devices at 10 spots in Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains, a south-western rainforest topping a million hectares. No camera reliably spotted the treetop-dwelling species, so researchers spent three months schooling a machine-learning species detection tool in the sound, tagging roughly half the nearly 800 calls in one six-week stretch. A parallel count of almost 150 units runs again this year.

Two Cambodian hospitals open AI-assisted eye screening centres

Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center — Kong Pisei Hospital and Techo Sen Koh Thom Hospital in Cambodia are the first sites outside China to get an AI eye screening system, Vision Health Intelligent Management Centres from the Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center. Big data analytics and the Internet of Things join the artificial intelligence behind this digital vision health management approach, spotting eye disorders sooner and keeping patients on tiered care, while Shanghai teams coach local staff on the kit. Patients topped 100 in month one and passed 500 by May.
