Cyprus puts its first AI law out for public consultation

Republic of Cyprus — Cyprus AI regulation reaches draft stage: the Artificial Intelligence Law of 2026, open for comment until 16 September 2026, carries the European Union's AI Act into domestic law. An Artificial Intelligence Regulatory Directorate would sit inside the Office of the Commissioner for Communications, with named competent authorities, oversight of AI systems and administrative fines for breaches. The national AI rules allow a sandbox for responsible innovation.

Cyprus traffic police take delivery of first AI cameras for Nicosia

Cyprus Police (Traffic Police) — Cyprus has taken delivery of the first AI traffic cameras, which the traffic police say will go up on Griva Digeni Avenue in Nicosia in place of two units now sitting idle. The force says the equipment will flag unbelted drivers, helmetless riders, phone use at the wheel and other distractions, with a supplier still to finish preparatory work. These AI enforcement cameras will run as a trial first, judged on what the results show.

Cyprus fire service runs four AI smoke detectors covering 80% of open land

Cyprus Fire Service — Cyprus Fire Service runs four AI wildfire detection units reaching roughly 80 per cent of unpopulated ground in the government-controlled zone. Brigade chief Nikos Logginos ranks the units central to the 2026 summer plan, saying each spots a flame or plume no bigger than a square metre. Another 13 are earmarked for industrial estates on an €800,000 budget, while taking AI smoke detection into open country and woodland awaits finance ministry approval.

9.3% of Cypriot businesses used AI in 2025, up from 2.6% in 2021

Statistical Service of Cyprus — AI adoption in Cyprus hit 9.3 per cent of firms in 2025, from 2.6 per cent in 2021, the Statistical Service found. Size drives the gap: 7.7 per cent among small firms with 10 to 49 staff, 15.3 among mid-sized ones, 35.1 at employers of 250-plus. Business use of AI was measured in selected sectors among firms of 10-plus staff.

76.5% of young Cypriots used generative AI in 2025, above the EU average

Eurostat — Generative AI use in Cyprus runs at 76.5 per cent among 16 to 24-year-olds for 2025, Eurostat figures show, comfortably ahead of the European Union benchmark. Across the EU the reading for that age band was 63.8 per cent over the same year. AI uptake among young people peaked in Greece at 83.5 per cent, then Estonia on 82.8, the Czech Republic 78.5.
