Tegucigalpa launches Honduras's first municipal AI agent on WhatsApp

Alcaldía Municipal del Distrito Central — Tegucigalpa's city hall has launched MDC en tus Manos, a WhatsApp assistant it bills as Honduras's first municipal AI agent. Residents photograph and locate damaged signage, blocked drains, water leaks or potholes; the agent classifies and routes each report to the right department in under a minute and answers refuse-collection and water-distribution schedule queries. Built by the Alcaldía Municipal del Distrito Central's new AMDC+IA unit with the Universidad Tecnológica de Honduras' AI laboratories, it aims to reinvent bureaucracy, Mayor Juan Diego Zelaya says.

Honduras ranks third-worst in Latin America in ILIA 2025 AI index

ILIA (Latin American AI Index) / CEPAL — AI adoption in Honduras scored 27.39 of 100 on the 2025 Latin American AI Index (ILIA) — 17th of 19 nations, third-last, ahead only of Bolivia and Venezuela. CEPAL and Chile's CENIA built the ranking and called Honduras a 'moderate adopter' despite wide gaps in connectivity, data centres and policymaking. Its score for governance of artificial intelligence, the vision and institutional capacity category, was zero.

Honduras launches MARIA chatbot for gender violence victims

Secretaría de Seguridad de Honduras (Security Ministry) — Honduras' Security Ministry unveiled MARIA (Módulo de Asistencia y Respuesta de Información Automatizada), an AI chatbot for gender-based violence support that also serves as a confidential virtual assistant for victims, free for women and girls, 24 hours a day, via WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, no app needed. It privately answers questions on domestic violence, harassment and trafficking and walks victims through filing a complaint. UNDP and USAID helped build it.

AI sepsis detection trial at Hospital Escuela achieves 98% sensitivity

Hospital Escuela de Tegucigalpa — Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa reported 98% sensitivity for an AI sepsis detection system tested in 2026 on 100 emergency patients. The tool paired natural language processing with a wearable biosensor bracelet, reaching an F1-score of 0.848 and kappa=0.847 against clinical diagnosis. Researchers said AI-based early sepsis screening should support triage decisions, not replace clinical judgement.
