Cayman's environment department identifies Nassau grouper by AI facial recognition

Cayman Islands Department of Environment — The Cayman Islands Department of Environment now runs AI fish identification on the Nassau grouper aggregation off Little Cayman, shooting as many photographs as possible across three or four days for software that reads every marking. Croy McCoy, research manager at the Research and Assessment Unit, said postgraduates once tallied each grouper by eye on footage, hours of labour that facial recognition software absorbs while matching this year's arrivals against earlier ones. That evidence feeds the Grouper Moon Project, run with the Reef Environmental Education Foundation on an endangered species since 2001; a multi-agency crew returned in February 2026.

Cayman Islands civil service develops its first AI policy

Cayman Islands Civil Service — The Cayman Islands Civil Service has completed a first Artificial Intelligence Policy (Version 1.0), Premier André Ebanks told Parliament, the Office of the Deputy Governor yet to sign off the Cayman Islands AI policy Government-wide. Risk management, governance, transparency, accountability and oversight duties span the service; procurement, piloting or deployment of any AI system awaits joint review of legal compliance, cybersecurity, data protection, architectural alignment and risk assessment. These AI governance rules carry enforcement and bar unapproved deployment, sensitive-data misuse, unlawful or harmful use and high-risk applications; Ebanks targets Q2 2027 for draft AI legislation.

Grand Court gives first guidance on AI use in legal submissions

Grand Court of the Cayman Islands — Personal accountability now falls on lawyers who lean on artificial intelligence while drafting court filings, following Justice Asif KC's decision in Bradley & anor v Frye-Chaikin. This marks the first written guidance from the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands on AI in legal submissions: using such technology to speed up litigation draws no criticism, provided the person relying on it checks outputs for fabricated citations or other invented content before filing. Attorneys who skip that verification could face costs sanctions, and rival counsel now carry a duty to warn the bench whenever an opponent's AI tools in legal proceedings risk misleading it.
