Verne — Verne and Pony.ai put passengers into robotaxis with an empty driver's seat on Zagreb's public roads from 10 September 2026, which both firms call a European first. Driverless robotaxi rides trace a 22-kilometre corridor from Verne's base and a main city business district to Franjo Tudman Airport Zagreb. Since paid operations opened in April the autonomous fleet has covered over 200,000 kilometres and several thousand fare-paying rides, at a mean passenger score of 4.7 out of 5.

50 of 78 Croatian public bodies use or test AI, and 26 have no rules
Gong — 50 of 78 leading public bodies in Croatia already use or test artificial intelligence while the Government does not, according to 'AI u javnom sektoru: Kako Hrvatska koristi umjetnu inteligenciju', the earliest systematic map of AI in the public sector anywhere in the country. Half of that group, 26 bodies, admitted to holding no internal rules governing its use. Gong compiled the survey between February and the close of August 2026 via freedom-of-information requests, logging 55 distinct AI solutions that run from Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT to biometric identification, medical diagnostics and the anonymisation of court decisions. Sergej Zupanic, who wrote it, called the picture of government AI use available beforehand fragmented and limited.

Hungary moves AI market surveillance to its science and technology minister

Estonian court fines litigants for AI-invented research citations
Tallinn Administrative Court — Ten people challenging a felling permit were fined by Tallinn Administrative Court after filing a submission whose citations named Estonian scholars who do not exist and studies nobody could trace — the first penalty of its kind under emerging Estonia AI regulation. One paid 150 euros and nine paid 50 each, well inside the 3200 euro ceiling; Tallinn Circuit Court upheld the ruling and it became enforceable once the Supreme Court refused the appeal. Judges accept that parties may lawfully use such tools, yet hold them answerable for whatever they assert. Kaupo Kruusvee, who chairs the administrative court, would rather litigants wrote in plain words of their own, and while earlier warnings and reprimands over careless AI use in court are on record, no previous fine is known.

Essex Police suspended live facial recognition, citing accuracy and bias risks, once it emerged its match threshold had been calibrated for another vendor's algorithm. England has created 'apprenticeship units', a new statutory class of short credential: 30 to 140 hours over 1 to 16 weeks, tied to existing occupational standards. Of the first ten units, published in April 2026, three cover AI leadership at Level 5, each 30 hours with up to £750 funding.
Estonia's AI Leap extends to vocational schools and 38,000 students
Estonia's national AI Leap programme for AI in schools expands to vocational schools from September 2026, adding 38,000 students and 2,000 teachers across vocational schools and the new grade-10 intake after a first phase of 20,000 upper-secondary students and 3,000 teachers from September 2025. UK AI adoption widened to 35% of firms but not deepened
UK AI adoption has spread without deepening. Among businesses with 10-plus staff, self-reported use of at least one AI technology rose from around 12% in late 2023 to around 35% by June 2026, and 49% at firms of 250-plus. Yet adopters' average number of AI technologies grew only from about 1.4 to 1.6, and just 10% report extensive AI use.
EU's AI Omnibus defers high-risk obligations to 2027 and 2028
Regulation (EU) 2026/1744, the 'AI Omnibus', took effect on 27 July 2026, delaying AI Act high-risk duties: stand-alone Annex III systems from 2 December 2027 and AI in Annex I regulated products from 2 August 2028, instead of 2 August 2026. Its AI Act simplification gives small mid-caps relief once limited to SMEs, widens regulatory sandbox access with an EU-level sandbox and eases database registration for exempted systems.

It runs close to 100 AI projects and aims for AI to underpin about 40% of its technology portfolio by year-end.

Two-thirds of Czech health facilities already use or test AI
Czech Ministry of Health — A Czech Ministry of Health analysis of 105 healthcare facilities across all regions puts AI adoption in Czech healthcare at 67.6% using or testing it, led by radiology at about 82.9%, then cardiology. The Czech-built Carebot chest X-ray tool, which highlights small lesions for less experienced doctors, runs at hospitals including Nový Jičín, Šumperk, Tábor, St Anne's in Brno, FN Bulovka and Slaný.
Bank of Italy finds AI raises firms' productivity and profitability
Banca d'Italia — A Bank of Italy occasional paper by Tiziano Ropele and Alex Tagliabracci finds that AI adoption lifts firms' labour productivity and profitability. Using the bank's survey of industrial and private non-financial service firms with 50-plus staff, matched to balance sheets and worker data, it sees a shift to higher-skilled jobs with total employment holding; just over 10% used AI in 2024.
UK government's Assist AI now serves more than 4,500 communicators
The UK Government Communication Service's in-house generative-AI toolset, 'Assist', reaches over 4,500 communicators in more than 210 organisations, above 70 per cent of potential users. GCS reports about three hours saved per user weekly, some GBP 5.5 million in projected annual efficiencies and 98 per cent of surveyed users finding it useful (Net Promoter Score 62). The first cross-government generative-AI tool to go 'live', it won a 2025 National AI Award.

Endoscopists' detection rate fell from 28% to 22% after AI use
A four-centre observational study in Poland (ACCEPT/OperA project), published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology in August 2025, gave the first real-world evidence of AI deskilling among clinicians: endoscopists' adenoma detection rate on standard, non-AI colonoscopies fell from 28% before routine AI exposure to 22% after. The design was not randomised, and the authors note its population differs from the main ACCEPT trial target, so generalisability is unconfirmed. It is a rare documented downside of clinical AI.
Brainomix stroke AI tripled patients' functional independence in NHS study
Brainomix 360 e-Stroke, CT-analysis AI from an Oxford University spinout, guides treatment and transfer decisions across NHS stroke networks in England. A Royal Berkshire Hospital study in Frontiers in Neurology linked it to a tripling in patients reaching functional independence, 16% to 48%, and a real-world evaluation found mechanical thrombectomy up over 50%. The study was pre/post observational, not randomised, and the vendor-reported scale of about 60,000 patients at every English stroke centre is unverified.

The National Physical Laboratory found no statistically significant performance gaps by age, gender or ethnicity at UK forces' settings. England approves a Level 4 AI and automation apprenticeship
England has a Level 4 'AI and automation practitioner' apprenticeship standard (ST1512), approved for delivery on 10 December 2025, for non-specialist operational staff using AI and automation tools rather than AI engineers. It typically lasts 18 months, with a 420-hour minimum, up to £18,000 funding per apprentice and Ofqual providing external quality assurance.

Klarna's AI produces about 80% of its marketing copy
Swedish fintech Klarna says an internal Copy Assistant writes about 80 per cent of its marketing copy, alongside generative-AI image tools such as Midjourney, DALL-E and Adobe Firefly. In May 2024 it reported image-production costs down around $6 million and the image cycle cut to seven days from six weeks, crediting AI with roughly $10 million in yearly marketing savings and 25 per cent less external agency spend. Later cutbacks to its AI customer-service agents left marketing untouched, and these figures were never retracted.

Adult learning participation in the EU-27 favours the already-qualified: in 2022 just 25.1% of low-qualified adults took part, against 41.5% at medium level and 65.7% with tertiary qualifications. Adults holding a medium-level vocational qualification took part less than general-education peers at that level, 40.7% against 44.1%.
Reach's AI tool cuts breaking-news publishing to 90 seconds
Reach plc, the UK's largest commercial news publisher, uses Guten, an in-house AI tool that turns trusted news-wire copy into stories for its titles, which journalists review before publication. At WAN-IFRA's Newsroom Summit, chief digital publisher David Higgerson said Guten cut breaking-news publishing from nine minutes to 90 seconds and supported about a quarter of output.
UK government's Consult AI sorts 50,000 consultation responses in two hours
The UK government's Incubator for AI (i.AI), part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, grouped over 50,000 Independent Water Commission consultation responses into policy themes in about two hours with its in-house 'Consult' tool, at £240 in computing. It says the job would otherwise take weeks; human experts needed 22 hours to check the output. DSIT estimates Consult could save about 75,000 days of manual analysis a year, roughly £20 million in staff time, across the 500-plus annual government consultations.
HSBC's AI screens 980 million transactions a month for financial crime
HSBC's Dynamic Risk Assessment, an AI anti-money-laundering system co-developed with Google, screens around 980 million monthly transactions. Group head of financial crime Jennifer Calvery says it catches two to four times as much financial crime as its rules-based predecessor, with 60% fewer false-positive alerts, freeing investigators for real risk. HSBC's figures lack independent evaluation.
